Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
