Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This wider security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to communication practices.
